2008 Choreographic Exercise (Short Program)
The CE (Choreographic Exercise) is centered around three elements:
1) a theme; 2) a choreographic process; and, 3) a type of gesture or movement.
All team members must wear all black costumes including legs and long sleeves on arms and no theatrical make-up is permitted. The goal is to provide a uniform look to the team as the CE is performed and to focus on the 3 elements only through the team's skating and body movements.
The CE is evaluated by two marks:
Choreographic: The choreographic mark measures the use of the skaters and the use and treatment of the music. The marks take into consideration treatment of the gesture format, choreographic process and exchanges and formations.
Technical execution: The technical mark is for the technical execution of the choreography. This mark takes into consideration skills such as quality of edges, pushes and glides; quality of execution of movement and gesture; body placement; and the pertinence and consistency of the above elements with the theme and sound environment.
The 2008 theme is "growth", the Choreographic process is "repetition" and the gesture/movement is "slow"
The Los Ice Theater's subject for their CE is "Metamorphosis of the Butterfly" using music from "Memoirs of a Geisha." This program shows the transformation of the skaters from crawling caterpillars to soaring butterflies. We grow and show variation in tempo and speed through the use of repeated movements that reflect the quintessential ideas of a caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly. We purposefully excluded many basic skating moves, instead focusing on the natural movements of the creatures and the individuality of each phase of development.
Elements in Order
1)Rolling, crawling, and body rolls express caterpillar-like movement-- slow, repetitive, gradual
2) Somersaulting, rolling, leg extensions, and shaking are representative of a cocoon-- growth and emancipation
3) Gliding, spirals, and arching show awakening, freedom, soaring, building, and growth
